Ontario Oversize/ Overweight Permits Restrictions

Ontario Oversize/Overweight Permits validity: Ontario offers annual and single-trip oversize/overweight permits. Annual permits are valid for 12 months, while single trip permits are issued for the specific approved movement and are subject to the conditions stated on the permit.

Ontario operational time: Oversize/overweight moves may be permitted during daytime, nighttime, weekends, and statutory holidays, subject to applicable permit conditions, route restrictions, dimensions, weight, and safety requirements. Night travel is allowed for qualifying vehicles and loads when the required conspicuity requirements are met, including the use of required illuminated “D” signs and other safety markings.

Restrictions on traveling in Ontario: Travel restrictions for oversize/overweight vehicles depend on the permit conditions, route, dimensions, weight, and applicable restrictions. Specific routes may have additional time or travel restrictions, so carriers must follow the conditions stated on the permit.

You can’t get a permit if

  • Your vehicle or load is overweight, and the load consists of more than one item.
  • Your vehicle or load is overheight, overwidth, or overlength because of the way the load has been arranged or loaded.
  • The load exceeds the rear of the vehicle by more than 4.65 meters, measured from the center of the rear-most axle, where the applicable overlength permit requirements are not met.
